Earlier in his career Jeff Bezos was working as a Vice President at a Wall Street firm called D.E. Shaw & Co., but in 1994 he decided to take a chance and try to harness his piece of the internet boom before it was too late.
In the early days Bezos operated the small company out of the garage of a home he rented in Bellevue, Washington. His parents certainly believed in their sons dream, having invested nearly $250,000 in 1995.
Amazon had its IPO (Initial Public Offering) on May 15, 1997, and began trading at $18 per share under the symbol AMZN on the NASDAQ stock exchange.
Despite all odds, Jeff Bezos managed to navigate Amazon.com through the dot-com bubble, and helped to grow it to one of the largest companies in the world, with over 566,000 employees worldwide.
